Contactless connector packs 60-GHz transceiver

STMicroelectronics and Rosenberger have created a contactless connector for short-range, point-to-point full-duplex data transmission. Aimed at medical and industrial applications, Rosenberger’s RoProxCon contactless connector employs ST’s ST60A2 60-GHz RF transceiver to deliver high-speed data transmission. Further, the module provides immunity to movement, vibration, rotation, and contaminants that can disrupt conventional pin-and-receptacle interconnects.

The ST60A2 transceiver combines high-data-rate transmission at Bluetooth-like power consumption to permit applications that are no longer constrained by physical connections. It transmits at a rate of up to 6.25 Gbps over distances of a few centimeters and consumes just 70 mW, enabling a reliable, completely contactless link. Housed in a 2.2×2.2-mm package, the chip operates over an extended temperature range of -40°C to +105°C.

In the RoProxCon, the ST60A2 transceiver is matched with an appropriate antenna. This offers options for different areas of applications, like smart factory, medical technology, connected devices, office equipment, renewable energy, and other high-bandwidth applications.

“Customers across the full range of electronics applications have expressed interest in this transceiver and several have shared their need for a module that includes the antenna,” said Laurent Malier, RF & Communications Division General Manager, STMicroelectronics. “Our cooperation project with Rosenberger delivers on that need.”
